IS A DRIVING CAREER @ KRISKA FOR YOU?
There are several things to consider before embarking on a career as
a driver or owner/operator with Kriska. Please take a few minutes to assess if what you want from a
company matches what Kriska can offer.
JOB SECURITY
The outlook for the trucking industry overall and Kriska, in
particular, is excellent. Kriska has ambitious growth targets, expanding fleet size from approximately
325 to over 425 by 2007.
Industry wide, there is a shortage of over-the-road drivers,
however, Kriska has an excellent reputation for retaining drivers. Our turnover for drivers with more
than 6 months driving experience is less than 10% (1 in 10 drivers), compared to an industry average of
more than 30%. In 2004, we were awarded the Canadian Recruitment and Retention Award.
Kriska has been one of Canada’s 50 Best Managed Private Companies
since 2000.
TYPE OF WORK
Kriska delivers freight in Ontario and Quebec and many of the 48
states. However, with our current customer base, over 55% of our freight is shipped into two states: PA
and IL. 10% of our freight goes to NY, 5-7% of our freight goes to states including OH, NC, Maryland,
NJ, VA, and GA. The remaining 25% of freight is shipped to a variety of states and/or within
Ontario/Quebec. Less than 1% of our freight goes to FL or TX.
PAY/HOURS OF WORK
Pay is usually by the mile, with 2,500 miles per week a reasonable
expectation. Drivers are limited to driving/working 70 hours in 8 days, Kriska offers a competitive base
pay per mile, a wide range of accessorial pay, and a generous employee benefits program. In addition, we
offer an incentive program for high mileage, and other performance measures, including safety.
Average first year earnings for a newly licensed driver range from
$40,000 to $55,000 or more. Annual earnings for an experienced driver range from $60,000 to $80,000 or more.
At Kriska, we recognize the value of your prior driving experience.
If you have 3+ years of verifiable experience operating a transport truck, you qualify for our top rate
of pay (upon completion of your probationary period).
Details about our pay structure for
company drivers and
owner-operators are available.
HOME TIME
No one should enter the trucking industry without being prepared to
sacrifice some home time. Many companies give a driver just one full day off for every week (7 days)
away from home, and require drivers to be on the road from 1-4 weeks at a time. Kriska is different
from most companies. We offer most drivers two full days off every week, and drivers are on the road
only 5-6 days at a time. Regardless, trucking is a lifestyle, not just a career change. A rule of thumb
is this: if you and your family cannot invest one year of your life with a company like Kriska,
trucking may not be for you.
EXPERIENCE
At Kriska, we prefer to hire drivers with a minimum of 1-2 years of
experience, however, we do hire newly licensed applicants from reputable driving schools. All new hires
participate in a two-day classroom orientation and an in-cab training period with an experienced Driver
Trainer to get them started right. For experienced drivers, in-cab training usually lasts one week or
less and for newly licensed drivers, between two to four weeks.
RIDER POLICY
Kriska does not permit passengers under the age of
16. Passengers must sign a waiver and if you are transporting a FAST
load, will require a FAST card.
QUALIFICATIONS
AGE: Minimum age is 21 years old.
CLASS AZ LICENCE: Graduate of a recognized truck school.
Kriska prefers to hire newly licensed graduates from schools that have been pre-approved and meet our
training standards.
DRIVING RECORD: A clean abstract (good driving record) with
no moving violations (speeding, running stop sign, etc.) and/or accidents in the last three years is
required.
ELIGIBILITY TO WORK IN CANADA: Must be legally eligible to
work in Canada.
CRIMINAL RECORD: Must be eligible to cross the border into
the United States and qualify for approval under the FAST Commercial Driver Program.
D.O.T. PHYSICAL: Must pass a standard department of
transportation alcohol and drug screening and submit to random testing as a condition of employment.
WORK HISTORY: A stable work history is preferred. 'Job
hopping' without a good explanation (attached to the application) is usually a disqualification. We
verify all work experience with former employers, so accurate information is vital.
